In 2024, 2.5% more municipal waste collected than in 2023
The total amount of collected municipal waste in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2024 was 637 471 tonnes. Compared to 2023, the total amount of collected municipal waste increased by 2.5%. This increase is due to the increased number of settlements included in the collective waste collection system.
The highest amount of collected municipal waste was registered in the Skopje Region - 180 729 tonnes or 28.4% of the total collected amount in the Republic of North Macedonia. Of the total amount of collected municipal waste, 535 606 tonnes or 84% were collected from households, and the remaining 16% from legal and natural persons (commercial waste).
By waste type, the highest amount of collected waste is mixed municipal waste, 546 866 tonnes or 85.8%, and the lowest amount is rubber waste, 1 136 tonnes or 0.2% of the total amount of collected waste.
The total amount of generated municipal waste in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2024 was 790 866 tonnes. The annual amount of generated municipal waste per person in 2024 was 438 kg per person, which is 12.9% less than in 2023.
Most of the collected municipal waste (99.8%) is disposed of in landfills.
