Net domestic energy use in 2023 was 2.6% lower than in 2022
In 2023, net domestic energy use amounted to 114 070 terajoules (TJ) and decreased by 2.6% compared to 2022. The largest decrease was recorded in Manufacturing section by 9.8%, followed by Transportation and storage by 5.0%. In Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply it decreased by 1.0 %, while increases were recorded in Construction by 6.9 % and Mining and quarrying by 3.2%. In all remaining sections of activities, it went down by 4.5 % in total, while in households it went down by 2.5%.
Energy extracted from natural resources went down by 10.0%. A total of 39 197 TJ of energy was obtained from natural resources, which is a 10.0% decrease over the previous year. The most, 23 994 TJ or 61.2% of all this energy was obtained in Mining and quarrying, followed by Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply with 8 935 TJ (22.8%) and Agriculture, forestry and fishing with 6 268 TJ (16.0%).
Resident units abroad used 5 963 TJ of energy (fuel purchased abroad for air transport and road transport) in 2023, which is a 14.5% decrease over the previous year. Non-resident units in the Republic of North Macedonia used 6 500 TJ of energy (fuel purchased on the territory for air transport and road transport), which is a 2.2% increase over the previous year.
