Data on spatial units is an important segment in the planning and implementation of statistical surveys, data processing, analysis and publication of results. Data on spatial units are taken from the Register of spatial units maintained by the Real Estate Cadastre Agency.
The nomenclature of territorial units - NTES is based on the territorial organization of local self-government in the Republic of North Macedonia and is aligned with the classification of the European Union Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics - NUTS, established by Regulation 1059/2003.
The main purpose of the NTES classification is to provide a unique and unified division of territorial units at the regional and local level. NTES is the basis for collecting, processing and publishing regional statistics and is used for planning and conducting regional policy in the Republic of North Macedonia.
The NTES nomenclature has 5 levels:
Due to the hierarchical nature of the Nomenclature, the parts of the areas of the 10 Skopje municipalities that make up Skopje as a settlement are separate units of NTES level 5.
The Government of the Republic of North Macedonia adopted the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics - NTES in December 2007 ("Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia" No. 158 of 28.12. 2007). Since then, changes have been made in 2014 ("Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia" No. 10 of 20.01. 2014) and in 2019 ("Official Gazette of the Republic of North Macedonia" No. 131 of 27.06.2019).
