Foreign Affiliates Statistics, 2023

In 2023, 2.6% of domestic enterprises in the business sector were foreign-controlled

In 2023, 1 783 or 2.6% of the enterprises in the business sector1) were foreign affiliates – domestic enterprises controlled by foreign enterprises.

Foreign affiliates engaged 22.8% of the total number of employees and created 34.6% of the total gross value added.

The largest contribution to the value added of foreign-controlled enterprises was made by Manufacturing with 37.7%, Information and communication with 17.0% and Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles with 12.2%.

Foreign affiliates were controlled mainly by European countries, i.e. 90.6%, EU member states controlled 57.5% of foreign affiliates, which engaged 63.9% of the employees and generated 64.2% of the value added of foreign-controlled enterprises.

The most economically important foreign affiliates were controlled by Austria, with a 16.9% share in the value added of foreign-controlled enterprises, followed by Netherlands with 11.2%, Germany with 10.1% and the United Kingdom with 9.1%.
