Municipal waste, 2025

The total amount of collected municipal waste in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2025 was 639 668 tonnes. Compared to 2024, the total amount of collected municipal waste increased by 0.3%. This increase is due to the increased number of settlements included in the collective waste collection system.

The highest amount of collected municipal waste was registered in the Skopje Region - 178 953 tonnes or 28.0% of the total collected amount in the Republic of North Macedonia. Of the total amount of collected municipal waste, 537 341 tonnes or 84% were collected from households, and the remaining 16% from legal and natural persons (commercial waste). 

By waste type, the highest amount of collected waste is mixed municipal waste, 553 126 tonnes or 86.5%, and the lowest amount is rubber waste, 1 106 tonnes or 0.2% of the total amount of collected waste.

The total amount of generated municipal waste in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2025 was 755 789 tonnes. The annual amount of generated municipal waste per person in 2025 was 417 kg per person, which is 4.8% less than in 2024.

Most of the collected municipal waste (99.8%) is disposed of in landfills.
